The first post of the day today is going to be dedicated to Paula Klepadlo, my trainer at Fit World. Upon meeting Paula I was amazed at her grace and obvious level of fitness. She is a soft spoken person, but she has so much to say. I really wanted to share some great information with all of you from the mind of a trainer. I asked her some random questions and I’m going to post our little interview Cosmo mag style: Q & A. I hope you enjoy it and if you’ve ever though about becoming a Personal Trainer I think you’ll love what she has to say. Enjoy and Thank You Paula for taking some time out for GGH!
Q: How long have you been a Personal Trainer?
A: I have been a trainer for only 2 years, so I am a baby in this field.
Q: What made you become involved with the world of Health and Fitness?
A: I graduated undergrad from Bryant College and have always been involved with athletics. Upon graduation I just could not see myself sitting in an office all my life, and with Bryant being a business school, I felt that an office was where I was headed, so I went to school for my masters degree at the best physical education college I could find, Springfield College.
Q: What sort of accrediations do you hold for Personal Training?
A: I have a master’s of education, MEd. from Springfield College, concentration Advanced Level Coaching, and I am certified through the National Strength and Conditioning Association (NSCA) as a certified strength and conditioning specialist (CSCS).
Q: Tell me about your Triathalons, Contests, etc…
A: I started running cross-country at the age of 8. I never stopped. I LOVE to race! I love the way it makes me feel and I love preparing for a competition. I switched to triathlon mostly because I kept getting injured and I had some friends who were into it. Triathlon turned out to be a different kind of challenge that I enjoyed that also gave my running muscles time to recuperate from the pounding.
Q: What is your favorite part of Personal Training?
A: Helping people realize their goals and feel great about themselves! It is a very fulfilling job and I love it.
Q: What’s your favorite food?
A: Chobani Yogurt, it’s healthy it tastes good… I also really like pea soup!
Q: What do you do for a training regimen?
A: Well.. That’s all changed a bit lately (Paula is PREGGERS!!!!) but I used to have a schedule where I swam 3 days a week, ran 2-3 days and biked 2-3 days with one day off and strength training 1-2 days. Now that I am pregnant and my environment has changed it’s a whole new challenge. I try to run 2-3 days, strength train 1-2 days, and occasionally swim or bike.
Q: What would be your advice for people interested in becoming a trainer?
A: I would say go to school! A degree in physical education, physiology, kinesiology, sports management, or nutrition are all complementary to personal training. Don’t just take any certification; make sure it’s a nationally accredited organization. You do need the certification over a degree in order to become a trainer but it really helps to have a degree as well. Not only does it add credibility but it provides you with a much more advanced understanding of the theory and the science behind how the body works and why some exercises might work better than others for a clients goal.
