CHEERS!

Last night we touched on Traditions and Presents……tonight…..COCKTAILS!

Whether you are drinking them yourself or attending a party with some who will be indulging, I think the info I dug up below will be quite helpful. I found some of the OK beverages surprising. Read on and see where your Holiday drink of choice ranks.

Calorie Culprits to Avoid:

Eggnog: This yuletide favorite is heavy with calories and fat — containing eggs, sugar, brandy or rum. Six fluid ounces of eggnog without alcohol has 257 calories and 14 grams of fat (more than a Snickers bar). Add some distilled spirits and your holiday drink has more than 300 calories.

Hot Toddies:
A hot toddy with 2 ounces of liquor (brandy) is about 200 calories, and that’s without the whipped cream. Creamy liquors like Baileys, Kahlua, amaretto and schnapps are particularly dangerous, averaging about 100 calories an ounce.

Martinis: Lemon drops, appletinis or cosmopolitans — their sweet taste is bad news for the hips. “Most martinis have 2 to 5 ounces of liquor, and the sugary syrups they’re made with can add up to more than 800 calories in one drink,” says Tara Gidus, M.S., R.D., of the American Dietetic Association.

Margaritas: What could be more festive than a margarita — frozen or on the rocks? A regular margarita bright with flavor — and sugars — has about 400 calories. WOW

Mixed Drinks: Remember, one and a half ounces of 80-proof spirits is 65 calories. Add six ounces of calorie-laden soda or a variety of syrups and you’re well over the calorie count for a “light” drink.

 Lighter Choices:

Champagne: Ringing in the new year at 100 calories a flute, you can drink to your weight-loss resolution without feeling guilty.

Wine Spritzer: Wine spritzers are half wine and half club soda. With three ounces of wine and three ounces of club soda, wine spritzers top out at about 60 calories and zero grams of fat.

Red Wine: Opt for red and you’ll get a healthy dose of disease-fighting flavonols and age-defying reservatrol too. A glass of wine typically weighs in at 100 calories.

Beer: Light or regular, a bottle of beer is a much better option than most cocktails. The drink has a bad reputation associated with the “beer belly.” But the calories in beer versus a martini might shock the most diligent dieter. Regular beer has 150 calories to the bottle, while light has about 100. Or my fave MGD 64! 64 calories and all of the taste!

Vodka (or Gin) & Soda: Sparkly mixers — like gin and tonic or a vodka cooler — can keep you light and merry at the same time. Most mixers with 1.5 ounces of 80-proof spirits and diet tonic or club soda have less than 100 calories and no fat. Top this refreshing drink with a wedge of lime or fruit.

Yummy right?! And with all of those choices it should be easy to find the perfect drink! Below are some tasty recipes too! And we even found a LIGHT Egg Nog!

Wine Spritzer

This colorful holiday cocktail is the perfect way to make merry without packing on the pounds. Start with just a splash of wine in lieu of a whole glass and add a dash of healthy pomegranate or cranberry juice, both of which are nutrient-heavy and calorie-light. Finally, throw in a touch of soda or sparkling water for a little pop.

Makes 1 serving

1/2 cup white wine
1/4 cup pomegranate or
cranberry juice
1/4 cup club soda or
sparkling water
Garnish with lime wedge

Eggnog

Skip the heavy cream and use skim milk and fat-free half-and-half instead. Egg substitutes are just as good as the real deal, and a single packet of Stevia In The Raw or Splenda can add all the flavor of a teaspoon of calorie-heavy sugar. And, since you’ve carved off the calories in all the right places — down to about 60 calories per serving — feel free to add 1/4 cup of brandy or rum for a little kick, or spice it up naturally with a shaving of fresh nutmeg.

Makes 4 servings

1 1/2 cups skim milk
1/2 cup fat-free half-and-half
1/2 cup pasteurized egg substitute
1 tsp vanilla
1 packet artificial sweetener
1/4 cup brandy or rum (optional)
Nutmeg (for garnish)

Combine all ingredients in a shaker or blender, or whisk to blend. Serve cold or over ice and garnish with nutmeg.

Per serving (without brandy): 64 calories, 7 g protein, 8 g carbohydrate, 0.5 g fat, 0.3 g saturated fat, 3 mg cholesterol, 0 g fiber, 144 mg sodium. Calories from fat: 7%.

Pomegranate Champagne Punch

  • 2 cups champagne
  • 1 cup pomegranate juice
  • 1 cup seltzer
  • 1/2 cup citrus vodka
  • Lemon twists for garnish
  • Combine champagne, pomegranate juice, seltzer and vodka in a large bowl or pitcher. Serve over ice with a twist of lemon.

    2. I make egg nog every year for the holidays. It’s very easy. I use a no-cook version only because I use those eggs that are pasteurized in the shell. I don’t want to be responsible for making anyone sick. 🙂
